Are You Bodyguarding Your Brain? Dr. Dean Ornish’s Stunning Science
Weāll face the bad news first: As the 5th leading cause of death for those over 65, with about 6 million Americans suffering from it, š¢ Alzheimerās diseaseās cost of care runs about $350 billion per year. And with an aging population in most countries, the toll is expected to worsen.
So far, thereās no safe, effective, and economic treatment yet, despite decades and billions spent on research.
Of course, as the families of those affected know, Alzheimerās and dementiaās financial cost is just one of all too many losses.
So you can imagine the surprise and joy š in the world of lifestyle medicine and beyond, when Dr. Dean Ornish published āEffects of intensive lifestyle changes on the progression of mild cognitive impairment or early dementia due to Alzheimerās disease: a randomized, controlled clinical trialā in June 2024.
(Well, maybe that style of academic understatement doesnāt elicit shrieks of excitement, but give another minute to dive into the details…)
The same Dr. Ornish who surprised the medical world in the late 1990ās ā when he showed that heart disease š« could not only be slowed, but reversed with a plant-based diet and healthy lifestyle š ā has now shown that similar intensive lifestyle changes (no drugs or surgeries needed), when practiced by patients suffering from early dementia, can significantly boost mental function ā”ļø after just 5 months. i.e., begin reversing Alzheimerās symptoms.
And yes, it was a nerdy-strong study: A randomized controlled clinical trial, using a control group that did no lifestyle changes (and unfortunately, the control group generally worsened on cognitive tests at the end of the 20 weeks). Furthermore and vital to note: the greater the adherence level of a participant, the more benefits that were recorded.
